Irene’s unique approach in the creation of the Beach Flats Mural has strengthened connections between Santa Cruz residents while celebrating the diversity of the city. Her goal in creating the mural was to pay homage to the people who shaped the culture of Santa Cruz; from Chinese immigrants in the 20th century, to the Polynesians who first introduced surfing to the California coast, to some of the current residents of the Beach Flats community.

At their June meeting the Arts Commission unanimously approved a mural project developed by local teens that will be placed on the wall/fencing at the corner of Laurel St. and Center St. at the Louden Nelson Community Center. The mural, titled “Unify, Decolonize, Thrive” represents the past, present and future of marginalized groups – with particular focus on the LGBTQIA community.
Ebb & Flow was an event for the community to gather around the beautiful natural landscape of Santa Cruz. It provided education about the river and its ecological importance and as our source of drinking water, but perhaps most important is that this festival demonstrated how public art can impact a community, and bring new life to an area that many people may have neglected in the past.

Planning for public art along the Rail Trail is a project of Santa Cruz City Arts and the Arts Commission and will result in a “Public Art Opportunities Master Plan.” Once this plan is complete, staff will seek grants and other funds for installing public art along the trail. Local artists will have a unique opportunity to propose projects using the Public Art Opportunities Master Plan as a guide.
Charles Sutton, retired luthier and Dana Peters, local artist recently collaborated on a baroque-style guitar with a modern twist. The design is a new take on the gilded paper rosettes found in seventeenth-century guitars. You can see the guitar in person this Saturday, May 20th between 3:00p.m.-5:00p.m. at the R. Blitzer Gallery located at 2801 Mission St. in the former Wrigley building.
